Ubuntu has a similiar version called Xubuntu but these XFCE powered distros are less frequently used as compared to normal distros composed of Gnome or KDE.

After the release of KDE 4 and then 4.1, Gnome 3.0 was announced, but as usual in a very steady way it is coming just after 2 years of development in 2010 approximately. So let us see what they are going to do for us. I am hoping that many little things missing on the name of simplicity will be there in gnome 3.
